This map layer shows how and to what extent states are making use of space.

Example of how to read the map:

Romania is using space in three ways: astronaut; space objects; space agency. Romania is also a member of a multinational space organization through which the government can indirectly have access to, or participate in, other uses.

  • Eurospace - European Space Directory

EuroSpace is the European space industry association. Founded in 1961, it is a non-profit organization. As part of its mission to provide information on space issues, EuroSpace oversees the European Space Directory, an annual publication with data on the latest developments, including figures for global trends in new delivery systems, a register of rocket launch sites and data on satellites and aerospace companies in Europe.

  • UCS - Union of Concerned Scientists

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) was founded in 1969 by scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States. The motivation for establishing this non-profit association of scientists arose from discontent among students and academics in response to the perceived misuse of research programmes by the US government for the development of military technologies. The UCS has, ever since, been advocating the civil alternative: Research dedicated to solving the problems of humanity and the environment. Among its core concerns are nuclear disarmament and the outlawing of space weapons. Its publications include the “UCS Satellite Database”, which provides an annual update on satellites, presenting key data such as names, users and operators, expected operating life, mission launch dates, activities and purposes.
