In 2014, UNODC published the "Global Study on Homicide" based on the "UNODC Homicide Statistics dataset". For its collection of data, UNODC defines homicide as the “unlawful death purposefully inflicted on a person by another person". Data on homicide serve as an indicator for the degree of national security. They are also used to compare violent crime on an international scale. Gaps in the data are due to the transfer of information of single countries with the respective data collection by the police and reports of citizens.
