This map layer presents the countries where child soldiers took part in conflicts and wars in 2017.

The underlying definition of children is that of all persons who are younger than 18 years old. Child soldiers do not necessarily have to fight in the conflict carrying weapons but are also used as couriers, spies, sentries, cook, carriers, etc. Children who were trained and recruited before they turned 18 are also included in the data set.

Millions of children are affected by war and armed violence around the world. Some children are victims of violence, while others are forced to take part in the violence, either by supporting fighting forces or actively fighting. Children who take part in war and armed violence are commonly referred to as “child soldiers.”
