This map layer shows the possession of delivery systems for nuclear weapons in two categories for 2017.
Means of delivery for nuclear, biological or chemical weapons can consist of very different systems, such as pieces of artillery, missiles, cruise missiles, aircraft, helicopters or torpedoes. The combination of various systems, such as aircraft with cruise missiles or submarines with torpedoes or cruise missiles is also possible.
This layer only takes delivery systems for nuclear devices into account. Short-range, medium-range, long-range and intercontinental missiles as well as air-launched cruise missiles and cruise missiles engaging targets on land are amongst the usual delivery systems. The coverage of short-range ballistic missiles (SRBM) is below 1,000 km, medium-range ballistic missiles (MRBM) can hit targets at a distance of between 1,000 and 3,000 km, while long-range ballistic missiles (LRBM) range from 3,000 to 5,000 km. The range of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) is 5,500 km and above. The range of air-launched cruise missiles (ALCM), ground-launched cruise missiles (GLCM) and land-attack cruise missiles (LACM) depends on the type of missile.
