This map layer shows the total amount of nuclear reactors per country for the year 2018 grouped into five categories.
A nuclear reactor is a device to initiate and control a nuclear fission chain reaction. Nuclear power plants generally consist of more than one reactor; in addition to power plants, there are 840 research reactors worldwide. To show the number of electricity-generating reactors, all reactors have been taken into account that, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have been classed as operational, pausing and shut down. To show the number of research reactors, reactors have been taken into account that are operational, decommissioned, pausing or that have shut down. Inactive reactors have been taken into consideration because they might still contain radioactive material or material that has been contaminated by radioactivity. The On-Click event shows the total number of reactors and the number of nuclear and research reactors of a country.
In addition to immovable buildings, there are nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, submarines and ships; these, however, are not registered and not part of the map.
